How To Choose The Right E-liquid Base
It is important to choose e-liquids that are compatible with your device. The base of an e-liquid will dictate whether it is a suitable choice or not.
All e-liquids contain various proportions of three main ingredients:
- Propylene Glycol (PG)
- Vegetable Glycerine (VG)
- Flavouring
It is the blend of VG and PG that is known as the base liquid.
Propylene glycol is a synthetic organic compound that is colourless, odourless and flavourless. It is considered safe to inhale and is used in asthma inhalers. High levels of PG can give you a dry throat, however, PG gives you a strong throat hit when you inhale and it carries flavour well.
Vegetable glycerine is a natural product derived from vegetable fats. It delivers a smooth throat hit and significant vapour but does not carry flavour as efficiently as PG. It has a slightly sweet taste and is thicker than PG.
The ratio of VG to PG found in e-liquids varies and is expressed as a percentage. For instance, if an e-liquid is stated as having a 70PG/30PG base, that base is 70% PG and 30% VG.
E-liquids with a VG content greater than 50% are only compatible with low resistance coils that heat to higher temperatures.
Flavours with a PG content greater than 50% are suitable only for higher resistance coils (0.9ohm or greater).
These days, many e-liquids feature 50VG/50PG bases that are suitable for most devices.
Before selecting your e-liquids, you should first establish the resistance of your coils and decide which base liquid ratio is appropriate. You can then narrow down your options to e-liquids with the ideal bases.
How To Choose Your Nicotine Strength
Most vape juices contain nicotine and the majority of flavours are available in more than one nicotine strength. You can continue vaping your favourite flavours even when attempting to reduce the nicotine strength of your juice.
To work out the best nicotine strength for you, it might be necessary to engage in a little trial and error. But here's some basic guidance as to where to start:

| 20mg/ml | The highest strength vape juice is recommended for seriously heavy smokers who would have smoked more than one pack of cigarettes per day. |
You may experience unpleasant side effects if your nicotine strength is too high. These include headaches, dizziness, mild nausea, coughing and gagging. If you experience any of these issues, choose a lower nicotine strength, fit coils with a higher resistance or vape less.
On the other hand, if you never feel quite satisfied and find yourself reaching for a nicotine hit too often and using more e-liquid than expected, try a higher nicotine strength.
The device you are using will also influence the nicotine strength that you need. Coils with a high resistance deliver less vapour per puff than low resistance coils and therefore less nicotine.
Nicotine Strengths and Vaping Style
There are three vaping styles that you may favour. Most people practice mouth to lung (MTL) vaping. Here, you draw the vapour into your mouth and then into your lungs. Alternatively, you could engage in direct to lung (DTL) vaping, where you draw vapour directly into your lungs.
An MTL draw involves minimal or modest amounts of vapour and so enables you to choose any available nicotine strength. DTL vaping is practised using low resistance coils that deliver plenty of vapour. If you switch from MTL vaping to DTL vaping, you will need to choose a lower nicotine strength.
Freebase or Salt Nicotine E-Liquids?
E-liquids feature either freebase nicotine or salt nicotine (nic salts). While freebase nicotine provides more noticeable throat hits, salt nicotine offers speedier and longer-lasting relief of cravings. You may need to try both options to establish which you prefer.

Short Fill E-liquids
If you would like to buy your e-liquids in more convenient, larger quantities than the usual 10ml, shortfills could be just what you are looking for.
UK regulations dictate that e-liquids containing nicotine must be sold in volumes not exceeding 10ml. Shortfills do not contain nicotine and so can feature larger volumes of juice. The bottles are underfilled to leave room to add nicotine shots.
Most shortfills boast high VG bases and so are suitable only for low resistance coils.
