Vape Liquid Guide
There is a dizzying array of vape liquids on the market, so it is a fair bet that there is something to thrill your palate and fit your device. With such an extensive choice, though, it can be a bewildering task to choose the perfect e liquid for you. So, here's a helping hand.
Whether you are new to vaping or an experienced vaper looking for a change, we are going to help you navigate your way through the considerable amount of vaping terminology and options that you will encounter.
After reading this article, you will find it a doddle to select the vape liquid flavour that suits your taste buds, satisfies your nicotine cravings and is suitable for your equipment.
How To Choose The Right E-liquid Base
All e-liquids contain various proportions of three main ingredients:
- Propylene Glycol (PG)
- Vegetable Glycerine (VG)
- Flavouring
These ingredients are heated in your e cig and create the vapour that you inhale. The base liquid, a mix of PG and VG, is mixed in a proportion or ratio that varies from one vape juice to another. That ratio determines the strength of flavour, the nature of the throat hit and the amount of vapour that is produced. It is expressed as a percentage. For instance, 50PG/50VG means that the e-liquid is 50% propylene glycol and 50% vegetable glycerine.
Propylene glycol is a synthetic organic compound that is colourless, odourless and flavourless. It is considered safe to inhale and is used in asthma inhalers. High levels of PG can give you a dry throat, however, PG gives you an intense throat hit when you inhale and it carries flavour well.
Vegetable glycerine is a natural product derived from vegetable fats. It delivers a smooth throat hit and big vapour but does not carry flavour as efficiently as PG. It has a slightly sweet taste and is thicker than PG. For this reason, it can clog the coils of a vape cigarette if they boast a high resistance.
E liquids with a VG content greater than 50% are only appropriate for sub ohm equipment. This means electronic cigarettes and/or vape tanks with coils that have a resistance of less than 1 ohm.
If you have chosen an entry level starter kit, vape pen or a pod system, it is likely that the coil resistance will be higher than 1 ohm and you should choose vape juice which is at least 50PG.
How To Choose Your Nicotine Strength
Most vape juices contain nicotine and the majority of flavours are available in more than one nicotine strength, so you can stick with your favourite flavours even when you lower your nicotine intake.
To work out the best nicotine strength for you, it might be necessary to try couple of them for yourself. For an idea of where to start, have a look at our list of available nicotine strengths in vape juice and how to select the best one for your needs.
| Strength | Use |
|---|---|
| 0mg/ml | Nicotine free vape juice is perfect for occasional or social smokers who are not looking for a nicotine hit, but simply enjoy the vapour clouds and flavours. It is also ideal for smokers who have managed to wean themselves off nicotine, but still enjoy vaping. |
| 3mg/ml | Suitable for those who smoke around 5 cigs per day. It is also the last stepping stone for those who are weaning themselves off nicotine and have succeeded in cutting down from higher nicotine levels. |
| 5 or 6mg/ml | If you smoke between 5 and 10 cigarettes per day, starting to vape with this strength of nicotine should suit you. |
| 10 or 12mg/ml | If you normally smoke around 10 to 15 cigs per day, this strength should satisfy your cravings. |
| 18mg/ml | If you get through somewhere in the region of 20 cigarettes a day, vaping with this nicotine strength should help you stop smoking. |
| 20mg/ml | The highest strength vape juice is recommended for seriously heavy smokers who will usually smoke more than one pack of cigarettes per day. If that sounds like you, we recommend starting off with 20mg/ml and tapering down gradually, to low or no nicotine levels. |
You may experience unpleasant side effects if your nicotine strength is too high. These include headaches, dizziness, mild nausea, coughing and gagging. If you experience any of these issues, choose a lower nicotine strength, fit coils with a higher resistance or vape less.
On the other hand, if you never feel quite satisfied and find yourself reaching for a nicotine hit too often and using more liquid than expected, try a stronger nicotine ratio.
The device you are using will also influence the nicotine strength that you need. Coils with a high resistance will heat the vape juice slowly, thus delivering less vapour and, therefore, nicotine per puff.
Coils with a lower resistance heat quickly and get hotter, creating more vapour. Those voluminous clouds ensure that you absorb a greater amount of nicotine.
If you are using a sub ohm device or are thinking of moving on to sub ohm vaping, you will require a lower nicotine strength.
Nicotine Strengths And Vaping Technique
There are two different vaping techniques. Most people use a traditional inhale which is known as mouth to lung (MTL). Here, you draw the vapour from your e-cig into your mouth, then inhale it back into your lungs. Alternatively, you could engage in direct to lung (DL) vaping, where you bypass the mouth.
An MTL draw is forgiving and so enables you to choose any available nicotine strength. A DL vape produces more vapour and delivers a greater amount of nicotine with each draw. A higher strength vape juice could, therefore, cause you to feel uncomfortable.
All About Nicotine Salt
The newest type of nicotine on the market is nicotine salt, also known as nic salts, salt nicotine or just salt (in the chemical sense: alkaline freebase nicotine 's positive ion + an acid's negative ion = nicotine salt).
Conventional vape juices feature freebase nicotine, the form used in replacement therapies. Unfortunately, freebase nicotine can irritate your throat, it isn’t readily absorbed by the body and its impact can fade quickly. You can increase your satisfaction by vaping at higher temperatures but complicated e cigs and powerful mods aren’t for everyone.
Nicotine salts occur naturally in tobacco leaves. However, in their natural state, nic salts aren’t readily absorbed, which is why pure nicotine was mixed with ammonia to create more absorbable freebase nicotine. In 2013 a team of scientists at PAX discovered that freebase nicotine can be turned back into a more bio-available salt by adding an acid. The result was nicotine salt, which gives smoother throat hits, longer-lasting effects and less irritation.
If you need to vape high nicotine concentrations, salt nicotine is the way forward. You will find a huge variety of salt e liquids in our vape shop. Just remember that nicotine is an addictive substance in any form, so if you have never been a smoker, don’t go for nicotine e liquid, choose nicotine-free vape juice instead.
Hybrid eCig Liquid
A hybrid e liquid contains a mix of both types of nicotine. The effect is that you get a slightly sharper throat hit than with pure nic salt and faster nicotine absorption than with freebase. RIOT Squad's Hybrid S:ALT range has an impressive offering of flavours.
Short Fill E-liquids
If you would like to buy your e-liquids in more convenient, larger quantities than the usual 10ml, short fill bottles could be what you are looking for.
By law, e-liquids containing nicotine may only be supplied in bottles with a maximum capacity of 10ml. Short fills are 50ml or 100ml bottles with nicotine free e liquids that have not been filled to the top, thus allowing you to add the amount and type of liquid nicotine that you prefer.
For every problem, there is a solution. This is a way of circumventing a law meant for the tobacco industry and short fills certainly save plastic waste. Though there are a few 50PG/50VG flavours, short fills tend to be dominated by high VG flavours for sub ohm vaping.
Vape Juice Flavour
There is a large number of vape juice flavours available, from pure single flavours to the most complex exotic mixes. If you are new to vaping, it can be quite daunting to choose between them all. For some good tips, check out our guide "The best e-liquid flavours for beginners".
If you are quitting smoking, it will probably be tobacco e liquids that initially grab your attention. This simple flavour profile has been treated to numerous makeovers and you can now enjoy blends featuring such delights as caramel, chocolate and nuts.
Minty, menthol flavours remain incredibly popular and provide a refreshing vaping experience. Often referred to a sub-zero, chilly or icy, these vapes are incredibly vibrant but the menthol hits vary from subtle to rather intense. We offer well over 200 menthol flavours.
Fruit flavours are firm favourites with many vapers. From apples to watermelons via citrus, forest fruits, strawberry kiwi and tropical mangos, you can indulge your palate with fresh fruity juices boasting both simple and complex profiles.
Menthol, aniseed, eucalyptus and ice cream are all in the mix with fruity cocktails, ensuring that vape juice flavour never has to be dull.
In the unlikely event that you run out of fruits, tobacco blends and menthol flavoured e liquids, you could turn your attention to drinks, spices, sweets and much more. There is a veritable feast of flavours to choose from.
