About Vape Coils

Vape coils (also known as atomiser heads) are essential components of vape kits. Your kit will feature a battery to provide power and a tank or pod that acts as a reservoir for your e-liquid. That tank or pod will contain a coil which heats when you fire the device and
then vaporises e liquid. A coil consists of one or more pieces of coiled wire or perforated metal that contains wicking material, usually cotton. The wicking soaks up e-liquid and it this juice that the coil vaporises.

What is coil resistance?

Metals vary in their resistance to electric current. Their resistances are measured in ohms. The lower the resistance of a metal, the hotter it will become when heated. Vape coils are fashioned from various metals and boast a range of resistances. Those with resistances of less than 1.0ohm are known as sub ohm coils. The lower the resistance of a coil, the more power is required to heat it. The hotter the coils get, the more e-liquid they vaporise every time you fire your device. Those huge clouds are suitable for direct to lung (DTL) draws. The discreet vapour produced by higher resistance coils is suitable for mouth to lung (MTL) draws.

What types of vape coil are available?

There several types of vape coil (atomiser head). Coils vary in their structures and the types of metal used for the heating element they contain. Please note that coils are manufactured for specific devices and will not fit any other devices. However, you will find coil ranges that are compatible with more than one device from the same manufacturer. Some coils ranges feature numerous coils to choose from that have different structures, metals and resistances.

Types of Vape Coil

Vape coils may be wire coils, mesh coils or ceramic coils. Which should you choose?

What are wire vape coils?

Wire vape coils feature one or more pieces of coiled wire. Those that boast two coils of wire are referred to as dual coils. Various metals are used but most MTL coils are fashioned from Kanthal which is a branded product comprised of three metals. Nichrome, stainless steel or titanium coils are required for temperature control vaping.

What are ceramic vape coils?

Ceramic coils boast metal heating elements but have porous ceramic wicking or a combination of ceramic and cotton wicking. Ceramic wicking reduces the risk of spit back and improves flavour intensity. These coils tend to be longer lasting than those with purely cotton wicking.

What are mesh vape coils?

Featuring sheets of perforated metal instead of wires, mesh coils heat quickly and evenly. They enhance flavour and are less prone to hot spots than wire coils and so reduce the chances of burnt hits. Mesh coils tend to last longer than conventional coils.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vape Coils

What happens if you don't change your vape coil?

You should replace your coil when you notice that the quality of the flavour has diminished, or you are experiencing a burnt taste. If you continue to vape with your coil, the taste of your inhales will only get worse. There is a small chance that the wire becomes stressed and breaks. If this happens, the wire could contact the body of your device and cause your battery to explode.

Why is flavour improved when you change your coil?

Over time, e-liquid residue builds up in your wicking and on your coil. This will impact the purity of the flavour that your experience. This is why a new coil will always deliver purer flavour. In addition, as residue builds up in the wicking, the wicking material struggles to absorb e liquid and vapour production is reduced. This will impact the intensity of the flavour.

Why is my vape spitting juice?

When you inhale you may occasionally find that droplets of e-liquid pass through the mouthpiece and land on your lips or tongue. The sensation is unpleasant as the juice may be hot and it will contain nicotine that has not been vaporised. This phenomenon is known as spit back and is usually caused by a flooded coil. Flooding can happen when you over-prime your wick or when your wicking is clogged with e-liquid residue and no longer absorbent.
