About Vape Kits

There was a time when the only type of vape kit you could use was a cigalike. Featuring a small cylindrical battery and a closed cartridge that held the e-liquid, they were simple devices that looked like cigarettes and enabled you to vape a limited number of flavours. These days things are very different! You have diverse vape kits to explore including stylish vape pens, handy pod systems and complex box mods.

What are vape pens?

Vape pens are vape kits that feature a cylindrical casing containing a battery together with the circuitry that controls the device. The casing connects to an e-liquid reservoir in the form of a tank or pod. Most vape pens are easy to use and are relatively straightforward mouth to lung (MTL) devices suitable for beginners. But more complex options are available including vape pens that offer multiple operating modes and that support sub-ohm vaping.

What are pod vape kits?

When the vaping world began moving on from cigalikes, manufacturers created kits that boasted a battery and a glass tank to hold the e-liquid. Then, there was something of a revolution when new types of kits came to market – pod systems. These quickly became popular choices and featured plastic pods instead of glass tanks. There are three types to choose from - those compatible with prefilled pods, those featuring refillable pods with built-in coils and those boasting refillable pods with replaceable coils. See below for further information.

What are box mod vape kits?

Box mods are battery casings that are square or boxy in appearance. They contain a built-in battery or a compartment for a removeable battery together with circuitry and a chipset. Some also feature a screen that displays settings and other useful information. A box mod can be connected to a compatible tank or pod to create a vaping device. Box mods tend to be more complex than vape pen batteries. They may offer multiple operating modes such as variable wattage, variable voltage and temperature control. As such, they are best suited to experienced vapers.

What is a starter kit?

The term “starter” is a little confusing as it implies that a starter kit is suitable for beginners. But in the context of vaping hardware, a starter kit is a package deal and one that contains everything you need to vape including a battery, a tank or pod, a coil, a charging lead and often also spare parts. In other words, a starter kit is so-called because it features everything you need to get started. You will discover many starter kits that are ideal for beginners, but you will also see starter kits that are designed to suit more experienced vapers.

How to Choose a Pod Vape Kit

As mentioned above, there are three types of pod kit to consider, each offering certain benefits:

Pod kits with prefilled pods - here you vape until the e-liquid in the pod runs dry and then discard the pod. prefilled pods are convenient and good alternatives to disposables. However, they are the most costly and least environmentally friendly choice. They also restrict your choice of flavour.

Pod kits with refillable pods and built-in coils - with refillable pods you can vape your choice of e-liquid. The pods can be refilled several times before the coil reaches the end of its life at which time you replace the pod. This type of pod system is more cost effective than those featuring prefilled pods and results in less plastic pollution.

Pod kits with refillable pods and replaceable coils - some kits even enable you to choose your coil resistance. You benefit from the maximum flexibility and choice while saving money and limiting plastic waste. The sacrifice here is the minimal inconvenience of changing your coils.

Big Puff Vapes

Since the ban on disposable vapes was proposed, manufacturers began developing alternatives. The result has been the introduction of so-called big puff vapes. These kits feature a battery, a prefilled pod and an e-liquid reservoir that automatically tops up the pod. In short, big puff vapes give you up to 12ml of juice in a single device. Once that juice is gone, you simply replace the pod and reservoir. Big Puff vapes provide the convenience of disposables while minimising waste. They are most cost effective than disposables but do not represent good value when compared to refillable vapes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vape Kits

How long do vape kits last?

Vape kits vary in their longevity, and their longevity will greatly depend on how intensely you vape. Integrated batteries don’t last forever but should serve you well for at least six to twelve months, possibly longer. Once an integrated battery reaches the end of its life, you must dispose of it and invest in a new battery or mod. Some vape kits feature mods with replaceable batteries. This means that you don’t have to discard the mod when the battery dies, you simply install a new battery. Your vape kit will also include a tank or pod and this could break if you knock or drop your device. However, you can replace the tank or pod and so you won’t have to dispose of the entire e cig.

How much do vape kits cost?

Vape kits vary in price. In general, the more complex the vape kit is, the more it will cost. You can invest in a simple vape pen for as little as £7 but an advanced vape kit with a powerful mod could cost you £75 or more. It is important to consider that the total cost of your kit across its lifetime and this will in part depend on whether it features prefilled pods, refillable pods with built-in coils or refillable pods with replaceable coils. Prefilled pods are the most costly options while vape tanks and pods with replaceable coils are the most cost-effective choices over time.

    How do vape kits work?

Vape kits feature a battery or mod to power the device together with a tank or pod to hold the e-liquid. The tank or pod will have a coil installed. You attach the tank or pod to the battery or mod. When you fire the device by pressing the fire button or inhaling on the mouthpiece, the coil heats up and vaporises the e-liquid. You can then inhale the vapour through the mouthpiece.
