Trading Standards Cracks Down on Illegal Vapes

Trading Standards Cracks Down on Illegal Vapes

Marc Smith |

Trading Standards departments across the country have been cracking down on the sale of illegal vapes. Across England and Scotland, disreputable vendors are selling illicit products or directly to underage buyers. This is important as there is no control over the ingredients of these illegal vape devices and eliquids. In Scotland, Highland Council's Trading Standards has confiscated " well over " 3,000 vaping products during the last twelve months. All products on sale in the United Kingdom like our pods and refills must be registered with The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. To register successfully, companies must provide certified testing and conform to strict safety standards. Trading Standards manager David MacKenzie said the impounded Scottish vapes contained " extremely high levels of nicotine ". Also, he added that they were " unsafe " as there is no guarantee about their safety. A shop worker has been sacked in Glasgow after failing to age verify and deny a sale to a girl wearing a school uniform. The mother said: " I wanted to see for myself what was going on, so I took her straight to the store and gave her money to buy two vapes. I watched her go inside and be served ." Tower Hamlets Council recently sent enforcement officers on a raid and found 5000's worth of illegal nicotine and vape products at a single store. A councillor said: " Hopefully, this operation has sent a strong message to the shop owner and anyone else selling illicit products and encouraging others that this will not be tolerated within our wards ." West Yorkshire Trading Standards relieved vendors across Wakefield and Castleford of 14,000's worth of illicit stock when they conducted their operation. Councillor Cummings said: " I'd like to thank the public for reporting premises that they suspected of selling illegal or counterfeit products. Their vigilance is important in enabling the Council and the Police to end this practice. If you have any suspicions about a retailer, please get in touch ." Meanwhile, in Liverpool, a responsible vape shop owner advised Liverpool City Council to recognise that not all sellers of vape products conduct themselves in a disreputable manner. The council has announced that it too is cracking down irresponsible shops. The businessman said: " Most specialists like myself started as smokers and saw the benefits, so they can sell with conviction, whereas for some other shops it's just another fast buck, and if they can get away with selling to kids, some of them do ." He explained that reputable vendors act responsibly because " it's a combination of ethics and just wanting to comply with the law. " Liverpool councillors have passed a motion directing Trading Standards to carry out raids, they will be conducting test purchases in mainly poorer areas of the city to identify illegal sales.
